David
Life
was born in a small town in Michigan. His undergraduate degree is in art,
with minors in poetry and psychology. Throughout his life, David has been
interested in metaphysics and spirituality. His Catholic upbringing inspired
devotion to Christian mystics like St. John of The Cross and Theresa of
Avila. He spent several years as an initiate of a lineage of yogic monks,
and has received initiation by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
David has
lived in New York City since 1979, where he pursued his art career while
creating, owning and operating Life Café, a Manhattan hot-spot for music,
art and poetry. Life Café is featured in the current smash hit Broadway
play "Rent." During his café years, David had close association
with Latino poets, old-guard Beats like Allen Ginsberg, Julien Beck, and
Judith Malina of the Living Theater, and was an influential performer,
painter and poet in the 1980s Lower East Side of New York. He has studied
yoga around the world with many teachers since 1984, including Shri K.
Pattabhi Jois, from whom he received certification in the advanced Ashtanga
Yoga series. His
interest in yoga is supported by his artistic, literary and metaphysical
studies. He imbues his classes with metaphor, musicality and spirituality,
spiced with humor, vigor and spontaneity.

-
God
is Always Watching. We all know the potency of thought, and yet we
believe that we can perform actions with any thought on our mind and the
outcome will be the same. Our thoughts determine the quality of our
actions so let's purify our thoughts first.
-
Give
up and Get Going. Giving students permission to surrender the
smallness; the fear, judgment, anxiety, and hatred, so that they can
become larger. Create situations which reveal the inner Self by peeling
away the layers of resistance in the form of habit, unconsciousness, and
misknowing.

MORNING
ASANA CLASSES
Jivamukti
Yoga integrates chanting, asanas,
music, meditation and practices of devotion into a vigorous physical
practice with a foundation in the ancient mystic philosophies of the East.
Jivamukti incorporates these yoga practices into the modern lifestyle,
without losing sight of the universal goal of the practices - liberation. It
is a blueprint for incorporating the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga
into our modern lives and awakens in the practitioner a need to protect the
earth, the environment and all the animals and plants that share the planet
with us.

KEYNOTE
The
Spiritual Path of Social and Political Activism
History is filled with activists who have pursued their goals using ethical
and morally sound guidelines. People like Martin Luther King, and Mahatma
Gandhi have shown us the power inherent in a life forged in the fire of
non-harming, truthfulness, non-stealing, continence and non-hoarding. What
each of us does individually is important in determining the future. Hear
how modern activists like John Robbins and Ingrid Newkirk work diligently in
the background of today's headlines to do the clean-up work of a messy
society.
